The Agricultural Institute of San Michele all’Adige believes that the breakthrough could create a foundation for improving quality traits of currently cultivated grapevines and establish new varieties that are more capable of adapting to the soil and weather conditions of specific wine-growing regions.

To educate the trade about the complex uniqueness of Merlot, Swanson Vineyards is taking its elaborate merlot seminar on the road this spring, visiting San Francisco, San Diego, Las Vegas, Chicago, New York, New Jersey, Miami, Tampa and Orlando. Winemaker Chris Phelps and General Manager Stuart Harrison will present two flights of Merlots from around the world, followed by a flight of Swanson barrel samples. “We’re trying to set the record straight on a varietal which has been so misunderstood and maligned,” Harrison explains. “We’re looking at Merlot from a global perspective, tasting and talking about the realities of the varietal worldwide. The seminar discusses the technical specifics of the variety and the statistical place of Merlot in world grape and wine production,” he adds.

Newspaper San Francisco Chronicle reports that the famous winery has been sold to Charles Banks, 38, who manages money for NBA players and other athletes, and Stanley Kroenke, owner of the Denver Nuggets. They bought Screaming Eagle, Oakville from Jean Phillips, whose dedication to top-quality wines made the property famous. Terms were not disclosed.

After having fallen sharply between March 2003 and July 2005, the cumulative total for exports of Bordeaux wines recovered perceptibly during the last six months of 2005. As a result, Bordeaux wines saw their downturn decrease significantly in 2005 and their exports in volume now total 1,717 million hectolitres (-3%) for a value of 1,032 billion Euros (-4%).

Brown-Forman Corporation (NYSE:BFB) announced today that its Board of Directors has elected Sandra Frazier, Martin S. Brown, Jr., and Geo. Garvin Brown IV to become directors of the company, effective May 8. All three are descendants of George Garvin Brown, who founded Brown-Forman in 1870, and they are the first members of the family’s fifth generation to join the company’s board. The Brown family controls a majority of the voting stock of the company.
