Brown-Forman Corporation (NYSE:BFB) reported diluted earnings per share from continuing operations for its first quarter ended July 31, 2006 of $0.76, up 6% from the $0.71 earned in the same prior year period.(1) Prior year earnings benefited from a $0.07 per share gain related to the termination of distribution rights to third party agency brands. Excluding this gain and a $0.05 per share quarter-over-quarter benefit of foreign exchange, earnings per share grew 11%. Volume growth and margin improvement for the company’s premium global portfolio, led by Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Whiskey, drove results in the period. Nearly every brand in the company’s portfolio recorded gross profit gains in the quarter, also contributing to earnings improvement.

Vintage Wine Trust Inc., a real estate investment trust focused exclusively on the wine and vineyard industry, recently announced that it has acquired the Sweetwater Vineyard from Silverado Premium Properties, LLC. The seller, Silverado Sweetwater Vineyards, LLC, will lease the vineyard for seven years, with terms that include three five-year renewal options and an annual option to repurchase the vineyard beginning in the seventh year of the lease term and continuing through 2021.

Revenues for the second quarter of 2006 totaled $1.5 million, compared
to $0.8 million for the second quarter of 2005. This increase was
attributable to increased sales of bulk wine, and revenues generated by the
Company’s new winery, which began operations in September of 2005. The net loss for the three months ended June 30, 2006 was $1.4 million ($1.37 per share), compared to a net loss of $301,000 ($0.29 per share) in 2005.

The Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB) published three final rules in the Federal Register establishing nine new viticultural areas. Treasury Decision TTB-50 establishes seven new viticultural areas within the boundary of the existing Lodi viticultural area, which lies within southern Sacramento and northern San Joaquin Counties in California. The seven new areas are Alta Mesa, Borden Ranch, Clements Hills, Cosumnes River, Jahant, Mokelumne River, and Sloughhouse. Treasury Decision TTB-51 establishes the Eola-Amity Hills viticultural area in Oregon. The viticultural area is entirely within the existing Willamette Valley viticultural area and encompasses roughly 37,900 acres within Polk and Yamhill Counties. Treasury Decision TTB-52 establishes the 2,090-acre Saddle Rock-Malibu viticultural area in Los Angeles County, California.

Results from the 2006 Royal Melbourne Wine Show are in, announcing Shingleback Winery as the winner of the prestigious Jimmy Watson Memorial Trophy. The Shingleback 2005 D Block Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, sourced from the Davey Family Estate Vineyard in the McLaren Vale, triumphed over nearly 1,000 entries. A debate in July hosted by the International Wine and Spirit Competition, looked at the implications of increasing alcohol levels in wines, not only from the ‘new world ’, but increasingly from European countries. The debate was sparked by a number of articles featuring the rising alcohol levels in table wines, and in turn a large number of wines entered into the competition with alcohol levels above 14%.

The John Platter SA Wine Guide has announced 25 five-star wines to be featured in the upcoming 2007 edition, the highest number since the reference book was first published in 1980.
The announcement is the culmination of several months of intensive tasting, by an internationally experienced team, of nearly 6 000 individual wines. These were sampled and ranked according to the guide’s five-point scale, which ranges from 0 stars (’Somewhat less than ordinary’) up to 5 stars (’Superlative. A Cape classic’).

The night between Saturday July 22nd and Sunday 23rd, their complete collection of Bordeaux wines was stolen. The collection consisted of wine bottles from the six Grand Cru chateaux: Château Lafite Rothschild, Château Mouton Rothschild, Château Latour, Château Margaux, Château Haut Brion and Château d’Yquem. Altogether the collection consisted of over 600 bottles of wine, almost every vintage from the 20th Century. The collection has been registered in the Guiness Book of Records for years, as the most unique wine collection in the world

Willamette Valley Vineyards, Inc. (Nasdaq: WVVI), net income for the three and six months ended June 30, 2006 was $259,206 and $616,500, or $0.05 and $0.13 per diluted share, respectively, compared to net income of $275,520 and $364,279, or $0.06 and $0.08 per diluted share, respectively, in the comparable prior year periods. Revenues decreased 2% and Net Income before taxes decreased 6% for the three months ended June 30, 2006, as compared to the prior year period. For the six months ended June 30, 2006 revenues increased 21% and Net Income before taxes increased 69%, as compared to the prior year period.

It was agreed that the DWI will retain its 12 foreign offices in North America, Europe and Asia. More than 70% of the budget for export marketing will be invested in the four largest markets, i.e. Great Britain, USA, The Netherlands and Japan.
