Effective November 1, 2006, Jean-Charles Cazes assumes overall responsibility for management of the renowned Cazes family estates and winemaking operations, extending from Bordeaux to southern France and including joint ventures in Portugal and Australia. The announcement was made by Cazes family patriarch (and Jean-Charles’ father) Jean-Michel Cazes, a legendary figure in international winemaking circles, following a recent board meeting held by the family-owned concern at its headquarters in Bordeaux.

Awards for the German Wine Elite
With bated breath German winemakers and German wine enthusiasts await the annual publication – traditionally, in November – of the well-known German wine guides “Gault Millau WeinGuide” and “Eichelmann Deutschlands Weine.” This year marks the 14th edition of Gault Millau and the 8th for Eichelmann. Both guides offer a wealth of information about German wine estates and individual wines, and every year the quite subjective evaluations of the authors are the subject of much discussion. Together, the guides comprise some 1,600 pages of reviews by Armin Diel & Joel Payne and Gerhard Eichelmann, who sample thousands of wines during the year preceding publication.

The California wine industry has an annual impact of $51.8 billion on the state’s economy, and an economic impact of $103 billion on the U.S. economy, according to a 25-page report released today by the Wine Institute and California Association of Winegrape Growers (CAWG) at the Fort Mason Conference Center in San Francisco. The two organizations commissioned the wine business consulting firm, MKF Research LLC, to prepare the study entitled, “Economic Impact of California Wine.” The report is an update of two previously released studies based on 1998 and 2002 data.

The California Sustainable Winegrowing Alliance (CSWA), established by Wine Institute and the California Association of Winegrape Growers (CAWG), recently unveiled its 2006 Progress Report indicating a 24 percent increase since 2004 in the number of California wineries and vineyard businesses working to adopt practices that are sensitive to the environment and society at large. Industry leaders presented the results at a press event held at Fort Mason in San Francisco, attended by the media, government officials, members of the wine community from throughout the state and other key stakeholders.
