UST reports stronger than anticipated results for the year 2006

UST Inc. (NYSE: UST) recently reported stronger than anticipated results for the fourth quarter and year 2006 primarily driven by continued improvement in premium moist smokeless tobacco net unit volume, record sales and operating profit for the Company’s wine operations, cost and spending favorability and the reversal of income tax accruals.

EU agency sets maximum limit for bisphenol A

The EU’s food agency recently set a maximum limit for human daily intakes of bisphenol A (BPA), a chemical implicated as a potential carcinogen and widely used in plastic food packaging and cans. The resins are also used as coatings for water storage tanks and wine vats.

The Millesime Bio annual tasting of organic wines sees audience grow by 10%

For the 14th year running, the Millesime Bio international tasting of organic wines took place in Narbonne, France, on 15, 16 and 17 January 2007. Organised by the Inter-Professional Association of Organic Wines from Languedoc-Roussillon (AIVB-LR), this year’s fair saw a ten percent increase in the number of visitors, including a 33% growth in the number of wine buyers.

With 116 Prädikat Wine Estates on hand, the VDP stand 4E15 at the ProWein trade fair from 18 to 20 March in Düsseldorf once again promises to be a major attraction of the fair. ProWein, International Trade Fair for Wines and Spirits, as well as the VDP’s own trade fair, the Weinbörse in Mainz a month later, are the keys to the sales markets of the world – the former is not far from, and the latter in the heart of, German wine country.

Not everyone jostling for space on the UK wine market is going to survive over the next five years, but those who do are set to become some of the industry’s biggest earners.

Consumers in Britain will spend more on wine than any of their European counterparts by 2010, when retail sales are expected to push the £5.5bn mark, a report by VINEXPO and IWSR says.

AGRI Committee takes cautious approach to reforming the wine sector

An own-initiative report by Katerina Batzeli (PES, EL) adopted yesterday in the Agriculture Committee argues for a managed reform of the Common Market Organisation (CMO) in wine. It comes out in favour of maintaining distillation measures in the short-term, giving Member States the power to restrict grubbing-up by vintners, and allowing only a gradual liberalisation of planting rights. The report also argues for strict labelling rules and maintaining current regulations on acceptable winemaking practices.

    The United States wine, grape and grape products industries contribute more than $162 billion annually to the American economy, according to a comprehensive study by MKF Research LLC of Napa Valley unveiled on Capitol Hill by the Congressional Wine Caucus on January 17. The Congressional Wine Caucus is a bipartisan, bicameral coalition of U.S. Representatives and Senators with an interest in the grape and wine industry, and currently includes 182 members.
