Top awards for young NZ Central Otago winery

Wild Earth Wines, one of the new generation of Central Otago winemakers, has taken two major pinot noir awards at the Sydney International Wine Competition 2007. The winery’s 2005 Pinot Noir has earned a Top 100 award, ranking in the top 5% of all wines entered in the competition, while the 2004 vintage secured a Blue Gold Medal, granted only to wines placed in the top ten percent of the 2,000 wines entered.

Over 1000 wineries showcased at FENAVIN 2007

The fair will attract 200 wineries more than the previous year. Nearly all Spanish Designations of Origin will be present at the National Wine Fair FENAVIN 2007, since around 1 000 wineries and cooperatives have confirmed attendance at the coming edition, to be held in Ciudad Real from 7 to 10 May.

Australia: 2007 grape harvest to be ‘smallest in seven years’ – but quality prospects are good

At just over half complete, the 2007 Australian winegrape harvest is expected to come in at 1.35 million tonnes, making it the smallest harvest since 2000 and a third smaller than total production in 2006, according to an assessment released today by the Australian Wine and Brandy Corporation.

Comprehensive culinary travel survey provides insights on food and wine travelers

A first-of-its-kind national survey on the popular culinary travel niche market shows that 27 million travelers, or 17% of American leisure travelers, engaged in
culinary or wine- related activities while traveling within the past three
years, based on a new report from the Travel Industry Association (TIA), in
partnership with Gourmet and the International Culinary Tourism Association
and released today at a press conference in New York City. The future is
bright for the culinary traveler market, as the share of U.S. leisure
travelers interested in culinary travel in the near future (60%) is
significantly larger than those currently engaged.

Distell toughs it out with top results

Responsible pricing and marketing, as well as improved efficiencies enabled Distell to more than meet the demands of a tough market, comfortably growing revenue ahead of higher volumes. For the six months to December 31, 2006, the company succeeded in lifting revenue 16,6% to R4,3bn on a sales volume increase of 11,0%.

bill would allow consumers to buy wine at full-line grocery stores in
Minnesota.

Diageo reports strong first half performance and increases guidance for full year organic operating profit growth to 8%

Paul Walsh, Chief Executive of Diageo, commenting on the six months ended 31 December 2006 said:

“Diageo has made a strong start to the year.  Excellent performances in North America and International and unchanged profits in Europe delivered double digit underlying earnings growth.  Our spirits brands, especially Scotch where net sales grew 11%, did particularly well, benefiting from increased investment in marketing.  As a result of this strong start we are increasing our guidance for organic operating profit growth to 8% for the full year.  We still expect to return a total of £1.4 billion to shareholders through share buybacks this year and to continue our progressive dividend policy.

Cautious approach to reforming the wine sector, say MEPs

Cautious, carefully-managed reform is needed to restore the vitality of the EU wine sector, says a report adopted by the European Parliament with 484 votes in favour to 129 against and 24 abstentions. It recommends retaining distillation measures for now, empowering Member States to restrict grubbing-up of vines, and liberalising planting rights only gradually. It also advocates strict labelling rules and maintaining current regulations on acceptable winemaking practices.
