U.S. wine exports, 95 Percent from California, jump 30 percent to $876 million in 2006

U.S. wine exports, 95 percent from California, totaled $876 million and 404.5 million liters in 2006, an increase of 30 percent in value and 4.0 percent in volume compared to 2005. In Europe, where the U.S. ships more than half of its sales abroad, exports surged 48 percent by value. Wine exports to Canada grew 29 percent by value.

Brown-Forman to distribute net proceeds from Lenox sale to shareholders

Brown-Forman Corporation (NYSE:BFB)(NYSE:BFA) announced today that its board of directors approved a cash distribution of approximately $205 million to be distributed pro rata to the holders of its common stock. Approximately $1.66 per share will be distributed on May 10, 2007 to stockholders of record on April 5, 2007. This amount will be adjusted for the actual number of outstanding shares on April 5, 2007.

Co Dinn promoted to Director of Winemaking at Hogue Cellars

Queen’s University studies find new links between Ethyl Carbamate in alcoholic beverages & fermented foods and cancer formation

First Venture Technologies Corp. (TSX-V:FEB) reports that a research team at Queen’s University has confirmed links between certain types of alcoholic beverages and commonly consumed foods such as wine, cheese, yogurt and bread, all of which contain detectable amounts of ethyl carbamate (”EC”), with cancer. Their findings have been published online in a research paper released on March 7, 2007 in the Journal of Carcinogenesis. The team, led by Dr. Poh-Gek Forkert, found that vinyl carbamate, a naturally occurring carcinogen derived from ethyl carbamate (also known as “urethane”), found in fermented foods and alcoholic beverages, causes DNA modification and mutations, ultimately leading to abnormal cell growth and lung cancer.

Federal prosecutors have launched a criminal investigation into counterfeit-wine sales and subpoenaed leading rare wine collectors and top auction houses including Christie’s in London and Zachys in New York, according a Wall Street Journal report on Tuesday.
