Eight children of California wine grape vineyard employees were given a boost to launch their college careers, thanks to scholarships recently awarded by the California Wine Grape Growers Foundation (CWGGF).
Selected for four-year $4,000 annual scholarships were: Sara Cendejas
of St. Helena, Laura Gonzalez of Hopland, and Rachael Martinez of Carmel Valley.
Two-year $1,000 annual scholarships were awarded to: Maria Jimenez of Lompoc,
Edgar Ramirez-Perez of St. Helena, Alba Reyna of Delano, Jennifer Villasenor of
Calistoga, and Celina Zuniga of Healdsburg.
“It’s truly great to see the kindness of those in the wine industry reaching out
to help those in need,” said Foundation Chair Ben Drake. “Each of the students
who were awarded scholarships has shown they have the perseverance to reach
their goals and we are all pleased we can play a role in their future success.”
CWGGF’s held its fifth annual Capitol Wine Scholarship Dinner on March 8, 2006,
at The Sutter Club in Sacramento and raised nearly $24,000 and set a new record
for funds raised by the dinner event for the scholarship fund.
The California Association of Winegrape Growers (CAWG), which represents the
growers of more than 50 percent of the gross grape tonnage crushed for wine and
concentrate in California, originated the scholarship program in 1998. The
program awards education scholarships to high school seniors whose parents or
legal guardians are vineyard employees of wine grape growers. The CWGGF was
created in 1999 to support the program in perpetuity.
