PLCB to feature wines by Latrobe native Arnold Palmer, and other gold legends during the 2007 US Open Week

The Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board will feature wines marketed by golf legends Arnold Palmer, Greg Norman, Ernie Els and Nick Faldo at select Wine & Spirits stores during U.S. Open week, June 11-17.

The Open, one of golf’s four major tournaments, will be played at the Oakmont Country Club outside Pittsburgh.

“Having the Open at Oakmont for the eighth time is an honor for Pennsylvania,” said PLCB Chairman Patrick “P.J.” Stapleton. “We created this promotion to serve the many golf fans and wine lovers who will be coming here for the tournament, or entertaining at home during the Open.

“We’re also excited to highlight these wines because Arnold Palmer, in addition to being one of the greatest golfers of all time, is a native son and resident of Latrobe,” Stapleton said. “We’re especially proud to feature his wine in stores this week.”

Palmer’s wines are a California Chardonnay and a Cabernet Sauvignon.

South African wines from Ernie Els include the Engelbrecht Ernie Els Red 2001, the Ernie Els 2001 and the Els Engelbrecht Meritage 2003. Australian wines from Nick Faldo include a 2003 Shiraz and 2004 Sauvignon Blanc. Also from Australia: Greg Norman Estates Cabernet Merlot and Greg Norman Estates Shiraz.

The golfers’ wines will be featured in five Premium Collection Wine & Spirits stores in western and central Pennsylvania: Waterworks, 974 Freeport Road, Pittsburgh; 624 Allegheny River Blvd., Oakmont; Monroeville Mall; West Shore Plaza, Lemoyne; and 5070 Jonestown Road, Harrisburg.

PLCB wine specialists will be available at these stores and to the media to recommend food pairings with the Palmer, Els, Faldo and Norman wines. Contact the PLCB Press Office at 717-783-8864 to arrange interviews.

The Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board regulates the retail sale of alcohol in the state and oversees a comprehensive alcohol-education program. It operates more than 600 stores and reported more than $1.5 billion in sales during the 2005-06 fiscal year.
