French harvest report: 2007 (provisional)

According to recent figures released by the French Ministry of Agriculture from a study carried out by SCEES (le Service Central des Enquêtes et Etudes Statistiques) there is a potential harvest of some 49.9million hectolitres of which 23.0million hectolitres are appellation wines (VQPRD), 14.3million hectolitres vins de pays, 4.5m of other types including must and 8.1million hectolitres for wines suitable to be made into Cognac. This is potentially one of the lowest since the year 2000 and 6% below that of 2006. Appellation wines are on average 2% below the average and 3% below that of 2006.

Spitzer signs bill legalizing auctions in New York

Liquor connoisseurs will soon be able to bid on rare distilled spirits from around the globe at auctions in New York, legalized yesterday by Governor Eliot Spitzer, according to the Distilled Spirits Council, which lobbied for the bill.

Christie’s, a supporter of the new law, immediately announced plans to hold the first liquor auction in New York through NYWines Christie’s. This will be the first such auction in New York since Prohibition began in 1920.

Demand for premium German wine reaches record levels

Germany produces two thirds of the world’s Riesling1 but it seems that this is not enough to meet the growing global demand for this high quality white varietal. Exports reached their highest level ever in 2006 at 2,906,335 hl and wines are fetching previously unheard of prices: 193€/hl was attained in 2006, 79€ more than in 1993.2
