The Wine Industry Drought Taskforce, the Winemakers’ Federation of Australia (WFA) and Wine Grape Growers’ Australia (WGGA) have recently announced that the 2008 harvest is likely to fall to between 800,000 tonnes and 1.3 million tonnes. The range of the estimated shortfall points to the difficulty in accurately determining an early insight into actual yields.

The Pernod Ricard Board of Directors’ meeting of 19 September 2007, chaired by Patrick Ricard, approved the financial statements for the 2006/07 financial year ended 30 June 2007. The 2006/07 fiscal year was a highly successful year for Pernod Ricard, marked by:
• Dynamic sales in all regions, driven by the strong growth of the wine and spirits market and by the Group’s performance, which took full advantage of the commercial synergies related to the Allied Domecq acquisition;
• A strong 21%* increase in operating profit from ordinary activities, which resulted from increased sales, higher contribution margin from the portfolio, due to the 15 strategic brands representing a greater share of consolidated sales, and from the
achievement of 100% of structure synergies;
• A sharp increase in profit from ordinary activities and improved debt ratios.

The wine industry is riding high on a wave of Sauvignon Blanc, the wondrous grape variety that in Marlborough is perfectly suited to industrial production on a large scale, driving profits for factory wine producers as energetically as it drives export volumes. But the first wine industry benchmarking report by international consultants Deloitte suggests that the fast ride to success offered by sauvignon blanc could lead to a fall unless wine producers tend to their long-term prospects.

An audition on the reform of wine at the Agriculture Commission in Brussels.
Experts and representatives have strongly criticised the proposed reforms by the European Commission, following a meeting recently organised by the Agriculture Commission in Brussels. Most of the speakers pleaded for a more ambitious political stance promoting wines with an emphasis on their rather than for grubbing up vineyards. Quarrels over the question of Chaptilisation - a north-south divide - were asked to be put aside. Giuseppe Castiglione indicated he would take into account the advice received when he reports on 21 November.
