Yalumba and the Institute of Masters of Wine announce the Yalumba Scholarship winner

Yalumba, Australia’s oldest family owned winery, and the Institute of Masters of Wine today announced Joe Fattorini as the winner of the Yalumba Scholarship. Joe Fattorini - wine educator, wine writer and all-round wine enthusiast has been selected from a group of outstanding entries and will receive this unique scholarship as part of the 2007/2008 programme.

To enter students were asked to complete an essay question which was specific to the Australian wine industry and its wines – the question that was posed: The Australian wine offering, particularly in international markets has become increasingly boring. To what extent is this true, and who is responsible-producer, retailer, consumer or journalist?

Yalumba Proprietor, Robert Hill Smith said, “The calibre of responses was superb, which made the selection process
incredibly difficult. This is more than encouraging and I congratulate and thank all the entrants for their considered and timely answers. We look forward to welcoming Joe to Yalumba and showing him what our winery and Australia has to offer. He will work alongside our talented viti and vini teams and have our wider resources at his disposal for the duration of his visit.”

Staying onsite at the winery, Joe will learn first-hand from our experienced and awarded winemakers – including Louisa Rose, Brian Walsh, Peter Gambetta and Kevin Glastonbury.

The Yalumba Scholarship will also provide Joe with flights from his closest major city to Melbourne for the Master of Wine Education Seminar, on to Adelaide to visit Yalumba and back to the UK. The scholarship provides an opportunity to participate in the education course in another country, however the most exciting part of the scholarship is the time spent with the people at Yalumba in the Barossa, where - all things going well and nature / time permitting – he will become part of a vintage and gain invaluable ‘on the ground’ experience in the winery.

Joe will also have the opportunity to visit the Yalumba nursery (a working / commercial nursery undertaking significant clonal work, particularly with Viognier and Burgundian clones), the cooperage (unique in the southern hemisphere and one of the few wineries in the world to have an on-site cooperage), and various South Australian vineyards.

The Yalumba Scholarship will be awarded annually to one Europe or Americas-based, second-year MW student enrolled on the full education programme and they look forward to welcoming students to Yalumba as part of their ongoing commitment to wine education.

Siobhan Turner, Executive Director of the Institute of Masters of Wine said, “I am really pleased for Joe and I wish to congratulate him on winning this most generous scholarship. I am certain it will be to his advantage to attend the seminar in Melbourne and it will be a brilliant opportunity to learn about Yalumba and the Australian wine industry. We are grateful for Yalumba for this wonderful opportunity.”
