Fortune Brands completes $885 million sale of wine business

Fortune Brands, Inc. (NYSE: FO) today completed the previously announced sale of its U.S. wine business to Constellation Brands (NYSE: STZ). The price was $885million. Coupled with the sale earlier this year of two wine brands to E. & J. Gallo Winery, Fortune Brands has realized total consideration for its wine unit well in excess of $900 million.

Australia: Wine Export Approval Report – November 2007

In the year ended November 2007, Australian wine export volumes grew 6% to 795 million litres and value grew 8% to A$3.02 billion. The average price grew 2% to $3.80 per litre, the second month the change in price has been positive on amoving annual total (MAT) basis. While the year ended November results represent a slowing in volume growth – it was the smallest volume increment in nineyears, at 44 million litres – the value growth was the biggest in three years, at an increment of A$227 million.

Rioja celebrates 2007 harvest with release of excellent Crianzas and Gran Reservas

After the picking of the final grapes of the 2007 Rioja harvest on 2 November, the Control Board of the Denominación de Origen Calificada (D.O.Ca.) expressed their satisfaction with the quality of this year’s vintage. President Victor Pascual Artacho attributed the potential for high quality wines to the technical expertise and professionalism of growers in the region and the good weather that accompanied the final stages of maturation.

WOSA’s diversity positioning to be extended

The news comes on the back of rising exports, with South Africa once again reporting a growth in sales volumes after a temporary setback last year, when sales dipped 5%. For the 12 months to September 2007, total wine export volumes were up 9%, she said, with the industry diversifying its exports into new markets and achieving significant success in Sweden, Germany, Denmark, and Canada.
