Rosé sales increased by 14 percent and reds by almost 19 percent over figures for 2006.
The overall balance of the number of back labels issued by DO Cigales’s Regulating Council during 2007, indicates a positive result. The appellation has increased its sales by 15.72 percent by distributing a total of 4,262,018 seals during the last financial year “An optimistic figure that increased by almost 600,000 more than the figure registered in 2006” stated a source from the appellation.
Rosé continues to be one of the main driving forces behind DO Cigales’s growth, up 14 percent in 2007, with an increase from 2,354,384 back labels in 2006 to 2,684,919 in 2007. “This year’s new rosés are already coming on to the market, with some very good aromatic and colour results that will ensure a very good rating for the 2007 vintage”, the appellation’s source explained.
However, the boost given to the appellation’s overall sales figures by red wines should not be ignored. Reds have gone from 1.3m back labels in 2006 to 1.6m in 2007, representing a 19 percent increase over last year’s figures.
The biggest increase was registered by crianzas, up by 24.5 percent, while young wines and reservas were up by 17.4 percent, in both categories.
