Champagne Ayala long unavailable in the U.S., is now for sale at New York City retailers for the first time. Ayala is also now being poured in several of the country’s top-tier restaurants including the Champagne Bar in the newly restored Plaza Hotel in New York City.

UK budget increases tax on wine

A 6 per cent increase in all alcohol duty rates will come into effect on 17 March 2008. This will add 14 pence to the price of a bottle of wine. In order to ensure that alcohol duties keep pace with rising incomes alcohol duty rates will increase by 2 per cent above the rate of inflation in future years.

Development of the Champagne Appellation

The national committee of INAO have studied and unanimously approved the extension of the AOC Champagne. The project will now be submitted to a public enquiry and an ‘opposition’ procedure in order to take account of all parties.

Mentzendorff celebrates 150 years

Mentzendorff were delighted to welcome 200 guests to their celebratory dinner last night at TATE Britain, marking the 150th Anniversary of the company’s association with Champagne Bollinger. The venue was chosen for its location opposite the Mentzendorff offices, which are situated on the South bank of the Thames and pre-dinner tasting included examples of extremely rare wines from each of their agencies such as Bollinger RD 1976 and Taylor’s 1948 Vintage Port.

Chateau Waitrose - planting for an English future

Waitrose has today announced that it will be the first UK retailer to plant vines in England. The vines will be planted in the next year on the retailers own 4,000 acre farm, The Leckford Estate, in Hampshire. Customers will need to be patient though, as this English Fizz will not debut on the shelves at Waitrose until 2014.

The Center for Wine Origins recently announced the grand prize winners of the Second Annual “Celebrate the Grape” Sweepstakes. From a record 13,300 plus submissions by Americans who demonstrated their knowledge of the importance of wine origins, three grand prize winners were awarded trips to the world-class winemaking regions of Champagne, France; Porto, Portugal (home of Port); and Jerez, Spain (home of Sherry).

U.S. wine exports, 95 Percent from California, reach $951 million in 2007

U.S. wine exports, 95 percent from California, reached a record high $951 million in 2007, an 8.6 percent jump from the previous year. Volume shipments in 2007 increased 12 percent to 453 million liters, compared to 2006.
