The national committee of INAO have studied and unanimously approved the extension of the AOC Champagne. The project will now be submitted to a public enquiry and an ‘opposition’ procedure in order to take account of all parties.
The current AOC stems from a complex history, commencing in 1908 by an administrative control of the region, followed by various judicial decisions from 1919 to 1925, then a legislative process in 1927. The law of 1927 encompassed a geographical extent of 634 ‘communes’, of which 319 were authorised to grow grapes.
An expert report published in 2007, formalised the Champagne region into two zones: a production zone of 675 ‘communes’ and a growing zone of 357 ‘communes’. Following receipt of any objections a team of experts will publish a new report in approximately a year from now. A final approval for individual parcels should be completed by 2015.
