Beaujolais at London International Wine Fair (LIWF)

Beaujolais producers unite under one umbrella at LIWF 2008 with wines from each Export Club member presented on the Beaujolais stand.

Beaujolais Wines1 will reinforce its presence at the LIWF on 20-22 May 2008 with a stand (H50/2) showcasing wines from all 38 members of the Beaujolais Export Club2. The Club, which is organised by Inter Beaujolais (the official trade association for the wines of the region), unites importers and producers to promote Beaujolais wines on the UK market. Visitors of the LIWF will be able to explore the whole range of these light and fruity wines, including Beaujolais, Beaujolais-Villages and the 10 Crus, with over 150 wines available for sampling on the stand.

The Beaujolais stand will be modern, fresh and distinctive, incorporating the three key campaign visuals (Fruit, Light and Chilled) launched last year. A new stand design will allow the Club members to beautifully display their bottles along the front of the bar in a perspex casing. This solid wall of bottles will represent the union of the Export Club and its common aims.

A special feature of this year’s stand will be a competition to win a pair of VIP tickets to Wimbledon, featuring Court Number 1 Debenture seats as well as first class hospitality, including a drinks reception, lunch and the traditional Wimbledon afternoon tea with strawberries and cream. Visitors can enter by placing their business card in the designated box on the stand and the first drawn at the end of the final day will win the pair of tickets.

Jean Bourjade, Managing Director Inter Beaujolais, comments, “The UK is one of the most important export markets for Beaujolais, with a 16.7% rise in volume (63,622 hl) in 2007 and a 15.7% (€22.8m) increase in value3. Working together through promotional activities and events such as the LIWF, the Export Club can showcase the Beaujolais offer of light, fruity and lower alcohol wines which meet the demands of today’s UK consumer.”

Notes
  1. Beaujolais Appellations

The region of Beaujolais in eastern France produces wines of excellent quality. The majority of wines are red and made from 100% Gamay. They are great to drink any time of the year, but especially good in the summer as they can be drunk chilled – so are perfect for a hot summer’s day. Alongside Beaujolais and Beaujolais-Villages, there is a range of ten wines, known as “crus” (this literally means “vineyard” and generally denotes a quality wine). These wines are generally great value and well worth getting to know:

    * Brouilly – these wines are deep red with aromas of red fruits, plums and peaches. Great with red meat dishes such as roast lamb.
    * Chénas – seductive, spicy wines which age well they are ruby red with floral woody notes and a velvet texture. Super with strong cheeses.
    * Chiroubles – Soft and supple these light fruity wines are bright red and have aromas of violets and lily of the valley. A lovely match to roast chicken.
    * Côte de Brouilly – deep purple in colour these wines have aromas of grapes and iris. Excellent with pâtés and country terrines.
    * Fleurie – vibrant red in colour with a velvet texture and aromas of roses, peaches and blackcurrants these are gentle wines. Great with lamb and chicken casseroles.
    * Juliénas – intense ruby red with heady notes of peaches, red fruits and flowers. Try this with coq au vin and you’ll be amazed.
    * Morgon – full-bodied and deep garnet red, these are rich, intensely flavoured wines with notes of ripe berries, cherries and plums. A star when serving rich meat dishes and game.
    * Moulin à Vent – deep ruby in colour with spices and fruits on the nose. Excellent with cheeses and red meats.
    * Régnié – supple well-structured cherry-red wines with violet, redcurrant and cherry aromas. A pleasant table fellow for cold meats.
    * Saint-Amour – ruby-red and flavourful with aromas of Kirsch and herbs. These wines are very good with poultry and sweetmeats. []
