Spotlight on Semillon
Tuesday 20th May 2008
10.30am-12noon on stand G50 at LIWF
Peter Lehmann Wines is increasingly acknowledged for its white wines as much as its reds and with more than 200 medals and 7 Trophies in just 13 vintages, the winery’s flagship Semillon is one of the best. Semillon is a favourite in the Lehmann household – there’ll always be a bottle in the fridge if you ever drop in for a drink – and many of the old vine vineyards in the Barossa only survive today because of the partnerships the winery has forged over decades with the growers.
“Old vine Semillon grows prolifically in the Barossa Valley. Pick it early to make a light, crisply dry, lemon scented white wine which also has the ability to age magnificently in the bottle”. (Andrew Wigan)
Single varietal Semillon, in the right hands, can be a wine well worth making a diversion for and at LIWF 2008 Peter Lehmann Wines invites you to make that detour to stand G50, to see what serious Semillon is all about.
The focus will be on the Reserve level wine, now called Peter Lehmann “Margaret” Semillon after Peter’s wife and a much loved and stalwart campaigner for all things ‘Barossa’. These old vine wines are made to age elegantly and a flight of 6 vintages will show you the development of this Barossa classic.
The wines:
Peter Lehmann Wines
As always there will be a raft of wines open to taste from Peter Lehmann’s award winning range. These will include new vintages of old favourites such as the newly released 2007 Barossa Valley Riesling and the 2004 Mentor, Peter Lehmann’s top Cabernet based wine.
LIWF will also see the launch of some new wines including the brand new Clancy’s White 2008 – a blend of Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc to partner the ever popular Clancy’s red.
Two further new names being launched to Europe at LIWF are the ‘Margaret’ Semillon and the ‘Wigan’ Riesling. These are the new labels for PLW’s Reserve whites. These are two of the winery’s most awarded wines and have justly been renamed to reflect two of the Barossa’s great characters: Margaret Lehmann (passionate champion of the Barossa) and Andrew Wigan (distinguished Chief Winemaker at Peter Lehmann Wines). Like the wines they now name, they are two of the Barossa’s highest achievers.
Look out for new vintages of a number of the special ‘’Vineyard Selection’ wines too. These wines are only made in years when a parcel from a specific district is deemed to be such an outstanding example of its particular part of the Valley, that it is separated out and bottled separately under its own ‘Vineyard Selection’ label. These wines are developing a cult status at cellar door as regular visitors snap up the small parcels of Barossa ‘terroir’ whenever released. The UK & Europe now also receive small allocations of these unique reds, all of which are sealed under screwcap.
