The Decanter World Wine Awards recognised the powerful changes of the 21st
Century wine world on Monday 1st of September, as it announced for the
first time an Organic and Biodynamic wine merchant as its Specialist
Independent Merchant of the Year .
The trophy went to Vintage Roots, the country’s best known organic and
biodynamic wine merchants. The company runs both a web-based nationwide
mail order service at http://www.vintageroots.co.uk , coupled with a supply
arm that services restaurants, shops and all other sectors of the wine
trade, supported by an expanding sales team.
Lance Pigott and Neil Palmer, co founders and directors of the company
collected the trophy last night. ‘Ever since we set up the company 22 years
ago we have been convinced that the way forward was for organic and
biodynamic wine production. It makes such sense for a product like wine,’
said Pigott. ‘We’ve had to battle for many years against wine buyers’
derision towards organic practices, but now the world seems to be paying
attention to these great wines. We are passionate about helping people
discover wines that are organic, delicious and probably healthier for them.
It is thrilling to have our efforts recognised by the judges of the
Decanter Wine Awards.’
The company’s website lists over 300 organic wines, as well as organic
beers, ciders and even chocolate from around the world. Several of the
stocked wines are trophy winners in their own rights , such as Fleury
Champagne, and Albet i Noya Cava. According to Palmer and Pigott, wines are
only listed if they are excellent wines first and foremost, and organic to
boot.
The company has grown over the years, but recently reports a
considerable increase in business as UK consumers become interested in the
benefits of organic food and wine. Vintage Roots is not only carbon
neutral, but prides itself on offsetting all carbon emissions associated
with its imports and UK deliveries.
Chairman of the Decanter World Wine Awards, Steven Spurrier said ‘The
competition in the Specialist selection was fierce, but Vintage Roots got
my top marks for its heart being in exactly the right place.’
