The Friuli Venezia Giulia (Italy) – based wine group obtains a record performance on export markets with its Pinot Grigio and Prosecco. Major growth in the United Kingdom, where sales have increased by 100% in two years. Now Fantinel is preparing to launch the first wine conceived in order to make a contribution to the fight against famine in the world.

In just a few years the Fantinel Wine Group has succeeded in making Friuli Venezia Giulia – situated in the North-East of Italy and one of that country’s premium Regions for producing fine wines – well-known all over the world. The group, with the Borgo Tesis, Sant’Helena and La Roncaia brands, has in fact shown an increase in exports of 40%, consolidating its presence in more than 60 nations. Its performance in the United Kingdom has been particularly outstanding. From 2006 to 2008 Fantinel’s exports towards this market have increased by 100%, and by 45% in the last year alone.

The U.K. thus becomes the Fantinel Group’s second most important foreign market, after that of the United States. This result has been achieved above all thanks to Pinot Grigio and Prosecco, but also with other typical wines of the area, under the Sant’Helena and Borgo Tesis labels: especially Refosco, Friulano (which up until last year was known as Tocai) and Sauvignon. The Fantinel Wine Group, headed up by Marco Fantinel, has thus introduced the pride of North-East Italian winemaking to the U.K. market, as demonstrated by the several awards received, especially with the Sant’Helena range, in the principal international wine competitions: the Decanter World Wine Awards, the International Wine Challenge and the International Wine & Spirit Competition.

Friuli Venezia Giulia has always been one of Italy’s finest Regions for the production of high-quality wines, notable for their elegance and finesse and for the great wealth of indigenous grape varieties from which they are made. Fantinel, which is today one of the most important wine making groups in the Region, has always believed strongly in this vocation, as Marco Fantinel affirms: “In a period when it has been fashionable for wine companies to invest in other parts of Italy, our family has chosen to concentrate exclusively on the D.O.C. areas of our own Region: Collio, Colli Orientali and Grave. All of our wines are made exclusively from grapes grown in our own vineyards, which are situated in the finest viticultural zones of Friuli Venezia Giulia”.

“The wines from Fantinel are now available everywhere in the United Kingdom: in top restaurants, at airports, in the main hotel chains and at the most prestigious golf clubs. This distribution has been achieved thanks to our targeted marketing strategy, which includes organizing tastings, being present at events and researching the market and its demands” claims Export Director Alessandro Rolla.

Apart from the quality of its wines, one of Fantinel’ strengths is in fact its ability to create synergies and stimulate the market with products that combine respect for tradition with innovative ideas. These include the Group’s latest undertaking: its Celebrate Life Merlot, a wine created within the ambit of a charity project on behalf of IIMSAM – the United Nations’ intergovernmental association that seeks to combat malnutrition in the Third World – for which Marco Fantinel is the Ambassador in Italy. Amongst the most important projects carried out by IIMSAM is its research on Spirulina algae, a natural food supplement that can save the lives of undernourished populations. Celebrate Life Merlot, which will soon also be available in the United Kingdom, is a Grave del Friuli D.O.C. Merlot with great elegance, finesse and an easy-drinking style. For every bottle sold around the world, part of the proceeds will go towards studies on Spirulina algae. Everyone, therefore, when they buy a bottle of Celebrate Life Merlot, will be able to make a small contribution to this highly important research project.
