Constellation Brands reports Q1 fiscal 2009 results; Company reaffirms full-year guidance

Constellation Brands, Inc. (NYSE: STZ, ASX: CBR), a leading international producer and marketer of beverage alcohol, today reported diluted earnings per share (EPS) on a reported basis of $0.20 for the quarter ended May 31, 2008 (first quarter 2009), compared with $0.13 for the prior year first quarter. First quarter 2009 diluted EPS on a comparable basis, which excludes acquisition-related integration costs, restructuring charges and unusual items, totaled $0.34 versus $0.21 for the prior year.

Fortune Brands updates earnings expectations

eBay found guilty of parasitical practices against LVMH and ordered to pay 19 million euros

In a landmark ruling handed down in Paris on 30 June, the giant internet bidding site eBay have been judged negligent in protecting the goodwill and brands of the group LVMH in an action brought by Louis Vuitton Malletier and Christian Dior Couture. This may have a significant impact for the potential sale of counterfeit wines in the future both on internet sites and through more established outlets.

For instance, the real price (in 1988 prices) for the basket of the entire Top 100 list [for the U.S.] was $4,313 in 1988; $3,132 in 1993; $2,533 in 1999; and $2,421 in 2004. Castel planting in Ethiopia

Earlier this month Castel, France’s largest wine producer, become the first French company to start large scale vineyard plantations in Ethiopia, investing about $9m (€5.7m) in the Castel Wynerie Private Limited Company, 200 kilometres south of the capital, Addis Ababa. “We started planting on May 10th and all the 125 hectares should all be done before September,” said Castel’s communications director, Franck Crouzet.
