Spitzer signs bill legalizing auctions in New York

Liquor connoisseurs will soon be able to bid on rare distilled spirits from around the globe at auctions in New York, legalized yesterday by Governor Eliot Spitzer, according to the Distilled Spirits Council, which lobbied for the bill.

Christie’s, a supporter of the new law, immediately announced plans to hold the first liquor auction in New York through NYWines Christie’s. This will be the first such auction in New York since Prohibition began in 1920.

Sotheby’s New York to offer the cellar of Thomas O. Ryder

On the evening of Friday, September 7th, 2007, Aulden Cellars-Sotheby’s will feature a single-owner sale, The Cellar of Thomas O. Ryder. The sale is comprised of 487 lots, which includes 5,477 bottles — with a focus on Bordeaux, Rhône and California, featuring the best wines from the best years. Once publisher of Food & Wine magazine where he founded the Food & Wine Classic in Aspen — which celebrated its 25th anniversary this year — Ryder’s passion for both food and wine extends to his ownership interest in a number of esteemed restaurants, including Danny Meyer’s Tabla and Eleven Madison Park in New York. Ryder, who has enjoyed a long and distinguished career in the publishing industry, was previously Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of The Reader’s Digest Association, Inc. A Louisiana native, Ryder plans to donate a portion of the proceeds from the sale, which is expected to bring $1/1.5 million*, to Louisiana-based charitable organizations and schools.

Auction sale at VinExpo by Christie’s

Vinexpo will be holding its 14th celebration in 2007 and Christie’s auction house will auction a fine selection of claret, burgundy and wines from the Rhône Valley on June 21. Christie’s first sale at Vinexpo took place in 1987. Since its creation in 1981, Vinexpo has become the most influential meeting place for wine lovers from around the world.
