Lion Nathan Limited (Lion Nathan) has posted a strong interim result, lifting operating net profit after tax (NPAT) by 7.0% to $167.7 million for the six months to 31 March 2008. Net sales revenue again grew strongly, rising 7.9% to $1.12 billion as increased investment in marketing and innovation initiatives continued to encourage drinkers to shift to higher equity national and premium brands. The robust revenue improvement was also assisted by the earlier timing of Easter in 2008 and the inclusion of almost three months of Boag’s trading following its acquisition in January 2008.

Following approval from the New Zealand Overseas Investment Office, Pernod Ricard confirms successful completion of the Framingham brand, winery and vineyard sale to Sogrape effective 31st January 2008. Volume shipments decline, average price rise
In the year ended January 2008, Australian wine export volumes declined 0.1% to 770 million litres. Value grew 3% to A$2.95 billion and average price grew 3% to $3.83 per litre.

Value growth outstrips volume growth
Australian wine export value growth outstripped volume growth in 2007. Value grew 6% to hit A$3 billion and
volume grew 3% to reach 785 million litres. While the incremental volume growth of 26 million litres was the smallest
since 1997, the incremental value growth of A$178 million was the largest since 2004. The strong value growth was
on the back of a 3% increase in average price to A$3.83 per litre, the first time average price has increased on a
calendar basis since 2002.

In the year ended November 2007, Australian wine export volumes grew 6% to 795 million litres and value grew 8% to A$3.02 billion. The average price grew 2% to $3.80 per litre, the second month the change in price has been positive on amoving annual total (MAT) basis. While the year ended November results represent a slowing in volume growth – it was the smallest volume increment in nineyears, at 44 million litres – the value growth was the biggest in three years, at an increment of A$227 million.
