A dynasty of changing tastes
This podcast was made at the 250 year celebrations of the Riedel Glassware Company in Kufstein, Austria.
The formulation of the Sommelier series of mouth-blown glassware which first demonstrated how a glasses’s shape could influence the taste of the wine inside was a landmark in wine glass design. The Riedel company were the first to develop this idea and their stemware is recognised worldwide as one of the finest, if not the finest, for wine-lovers. The range has been extended to include specific glasses for all popular varietals.

Pinot Noir is perhaps the world’s most difficult grape variety from which to make great wine. It requires small yields and the role of the winemaker is crucial. In January/February 2006 we interviewed producers from around the world about their wines and what makes them so unique. What is the most important thing when producing Pinot Noir? How important is the wine-maker and how important the terroir? We talk to producers in France (Burgundy and Alsace), USA (Oregon and California), South Africa, Germany and New Zealand.

A state monopoly controlling the Swedish market, Systembolaget, was founded to protect public health which makes it impossible to make money on alcoholic beverages. However, the system is still backed by 55 % of the population and relies on a very good and equitable selection procedure and excellent distribution service to ensure profitability.
Interview with: Ann Burgaz-Schmidt (Purchasing Manager, Systembolaget AB)
Topics discussed: The support from the Swedish population; the imminent decision of the European Court concerning internet sales of wine in Sweden; where taxes from internet sales should be paid; how wine producers can influence their wine imports into Sweden (with Fabrice Dubourdieu).

A report from Wine Evolution, Paris. January 2006
A television programme on wine helps educate the consumer on the very diverse aspects of this product. This is a very interesting approach in a country divided into several Provinces, each with its own government, culture and tradition, and perception of food and alcohol. Deregulation of the wine and spirits retail sector in some Provinces should benefit both consumers and the industry.
Topics discussed: Creating a TV production company and marketing the content throughout North America.
