The wine industry is riding high on a wave of Sauvignon Blanc, the wondrous grape variety that in Marlborough is perfectly suited to industrial production on a large scale, driving profits for factory wine producers as energetically as it drives export volumes. But the first wine industry benchmarking report by international consultants Deloitte suggests that the fast ride to success offered by sauvignon blanc could lead to a fall unless wine producers tend to their long-term prospects.

New volume and value records were set for Australian wine exports in the year ending January 2007. Volume grew 9% to 768 million litres while value grew 2% to A$2.85 billion. The average price declined 7% to A$3.71 per litre due in part to volume growth in bulk shipments. The bottled average price increased 2 cents to A$4.83 per litre while the bulk average price declined 14% to A$1.04 per litre.

The Source On-Premise Beverage Decision Makers Rely On
The United States wine, grape and grape products industries contribute more than $162 billion annually to the American economy, according to a comprehensive study by MKF Research LLC of Napa Valley unveiled on Capitol Hill by the Congressional Wine Caucus on January 17. The Congressional Wine Caucus is a bipartisan, bicameral coalition of U.S. Representatives and Senators with an interest in the grape and wine industry, and currently includes 182 members.

Awards for the German Wine Elite
With bated breath German winemakers and German wine enthusiasts await the annual publication – traditionally, in November – of the well-known German wine guides “Gault Millau WeinGuide” and “Eichelmann Deutschlands Weine.” This year marks the 14th edition of Gault Millau and the 8th for Eichelmann. Both guides offer a wealth of information about German wine estates and individual wines, and every year the quite subjective evaluations of the authors are the subject of much discussion. Together, the guides comprise some 1,600 pages of reviews by Armin Diel & Joel Payne and Gerhard Eichelmann, who sample thousands of wines during the year preceding publication.
