Constellation Brands, Inc. (NYSE: STZ, ASX: CBR), recently announced it has reached agreement with Guillaume Cuvelier and Belgian-based Alcofinance S.A., the owners of SVEDKA Vodka, to acquire the brand and related business for $384 million. The transaction, which includes the acquisition of Spirits Marque One LLC, the SVEDKA brand owner, is expected to close approximately March 1, 2007.

Distell is to become the exclusive South African wine supplier to the Altia Corporation, an international multi-beverage company that operates in the Nordic states, where it is the market leader, as well as in the emergent Baltic markets. Both regions in Europe continue to reflect robust demand for South African wines, despite the fall-off in some markets such as the UK and Holland, according to statistics for the 12 months to October 2006, released by SA Wine Industry Systems (SAWIS).

The night between Saturday July 22nd and Sunday 23rd, their complete collection of Bordeaux wines was stolen. The collection consisted of wine bottles from the six Grand Cru chateaux: Château Lafite Rothschild, Château Mouton Rothschild, Château Latour, Château Margaux, Château Haut Brion and Château d’Yquem. Altogether the collection consisted of over 600 bottles of wine, almost every vintage from the 20th Century. The collection has been registered in the Guiness Book of Records for years, as the most unique wine collection in the world

A state monopoly controlling the Swedish market, Systembolaget, was founded to protect public health which makes it impossible to make money on alcoholic beverages. However, the system is still backed by 55 % of the population and relies on a very good and equitable selection procedure and excellent distribution service to ensure profitability.
