A lot of producers cannot lower prices, the banks won't let them. There is a perfect storm of strong Euro, bad economy and leveraged producers that will both force consolidation and enable entry for new players. It will push consumers to learn about new areas in France - Bergerac, Savoie, Cahors and others; or learn consume wines from other places. Lets not kid ourselves, there is nothing better than a good burgundy, red or white - but the bloom is off this rose until the prices become more rational, and some of our favorite producers might go by the wayside as a result.

Nice article. I was, however, looking for statistics on the percentage by state of where wine moves. Since about 90% moves from the west coast, if you could either direct me or provide that information, I would really appreciate it.
Also, the average distance wine travels to get to the end consumer. Thank you.
Sincerely,
Steven Fisher

Interesting that V&S, partially owned by the Swedish government, should be voted, by the government run Systembolaget, the best distributor for the 5th consecutive year during which time V&S was accused of illegal trading.

Nothing much happened to the government owned V&S.

The snow is pure white but underneath it is very dirty!

Dear Reader,

Thank you for your comment. We felt that despite the quality of the written English it is a serious study and one therefore that required to be brought to people's attention. We are not aware of any original French version and we would imagine that most readers of this site would nonetheless prefer to read it in English, however poor the standard of the writing. If an original French version is notified to us we would be happy to provide a link.

We received this from one reader:

Dear Editors of Wine Industry Report:

Just a remark about the article "The influence of a label on wine consumption" (April 28th), to which you have provided a link on your site: the "English" in this article is often so bad that it renders the meaning unclear, at certain points even completely undecipherable, which is a shame. Maybe you could ask the authors to make the original French version available as well? (I sent an email to them myself, a week or so back, asking for a copy of the original, but so far no response.)

They're not doing themselves or their (potentially) very interesting and useful article any favours by trying to write in a language they haven't fully gotten the hang of (although, to be fair, their English isn't much worse than a lot of the Internet English produced by native speakers!). It also occurs to me that linking directly to such a poorly-written/translated article doesn't reflect all that positively on "Wine Industry Report", either.

I wonder whether you've had any similar feedback about this article from other visitors to the site?

Sam Tolley, Chief Executive of the Australian Wine and Brandy Corporation, has paid tribute to Len Evans, one of the best known and highly regarded figures of the Australian wine industry, who died
recently at the age of 75.

Mr Tolley said Len Evans was an irreplaceable and legendary figure in the history of the Australian wine sector.

“Len Evans was a person who lit the fire of enthusiasm for table wine in Australia in the 1960s at a time when it was far from the minds of most Australians,” Mr Tolley said.

“His fervent passion for the industry infected many through his relentless campaigning for the industry to address a range of issues and his belief and excitement in education of both wine enthusiasts and
the general public.”

“Len’s passing robs Australia of one of its greatest characters whose enormous influence as a wine writer, show judge, maker and advocate leaves an extraordinary legacy.”

“Len will be well recognised in history for his significant contribution over many decades. He will be
sadly missed.”

It has been brought to our attention that this figure of 4900 outlets or potential outlets, quoted from an otherwise realiable source is simply too high.

As someone commented to us "The number of 4900 is funny for the French market. FNCI represents 419 independant point of sales and Nicolas = 500 + Repaire de Bacchus = 100. There must be around 1000-1500 max retailers in France (excl supermarkets)."

See FNCI www.caviste-independant.com

It has been brought to our attention that this figure of 4900 outlets or potential outlets, quoted from an otherwise realiable source is simply too high.

As someone commented to us “The number of 4900 is funny for the French market. FNCI represents 419 independant point of sales and Nicolas = 500 + Repaire de Bacchus = 100. There must be around 1000-1500 max retailers in France (excl supermarkets).”

The $90, 000 paid by the Antique wine Company for the 1787 Yquem is not the most expensive bottle of wine in the world. On December 5, 1985, Christie's in London auctioned a 1784 Laffite [sic] engraved with the initials "Th.J." The winning bid by Forbes magazine was $156,450 (not $56,000 as reported in the note) and still the world's most expensive regular size bottle of wine. For more details on the 1784 Laffite [sic] and whether it was ever owned by Thomas Jefferson, see "An Evening with Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Jefferson: Dinner, Wine, and Conversation" by James Gabler, Bacchus Press Ltd, 2006, beginning at page 124 through page 131.
